
Certificate III in Close Protection Operations

This nationally recognised qualification is designed for individuals seeking to apply for a Queensland Bodyguard Licence and work in close personal protection roles. A bodyguard is responsible for protecting the personal safety of a specific individual under varying security assignment conditions.
The course develops the skills required to plan and prepare protective security arrangements, implement security and safety procedures during escort activities, and monitor and review the effectiveness of close protection assignments.
If you are new to the security industry and do not yet hold a Queensland Class 1 Security Licence, you must first complete the CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations.
As a Close Protection (Bodyguard) Officer, your responsibilities may include:
Conducting risk assessments and planning protective security arrangements
Implementing close protection services during escort operations
Managing conflict and responding to security risk situations
Applying empty hand defensive techniques where required
Coordinating security services and maintaining client safety
Providing advanced first aid in emergency situations

Entry & Assessment Requirements
Participants must:
Be physically capable of participating in defensive tactics training
Have sufficient English language, literacy and communication skills
Have access to a computer with internet and Microsoft Word
Assessment requirements include:
Performing at least 2 minutes (5 cycles) of CPR on adult and infant resuscitation manikins placed on the floor
Important Information – Licensing Requirements for Close Protection (Bodyguard)
Anyone may enrol in CPP31418; however, to work as a bodyguard in Queensland you must:
Hold a Class 1 Security Provider Licence with a bodyguard endorsement
Already hold a Class 1 Security Licence before adding the bodyguard endorsement
Completing this course does not automatically grant a licence. Licensing is issued separately by the Queensland Office of Fair Trading (OFT).
If you do not currently hold a Class 1 Security Licence, you must first:
Complete CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations
Apply for your Class 1 Security Licence through the OFT (processing is typically 4–6 weeks)
Licence & Regulatory Requirements
All Queensland Security Licences are administered by the Office of Fair Trading.
Applicants must:
Be over 18 years of age
Be a fit and proper person
Have no disqualifying offences under the Criminal Code within the last 10 years
Additional government fees, fingerprinting and criminal history checks apply.
Ongoing Requirements
To maintain a bodyguard endorsement, the Office of Fair Trading requires:
Crowd Controller refresher training every 3 years (including negotiation, empty-hand techniques and first aid)
Annual CPR training
Delivery Format
This course is delivered via blended learning (online and face-to-face).
Online Component
Approximately 15–20 hours per unit (14 units total)
Students progress at their own pace
Modules are sequentially unlocked upon submission of assessments
Includes written and case scenario-based assessments
Ongoing assessor support via student portal
Students have 12 months from enrolment to complete all requirements
Classroom Component
3-day in-person practical training session
Includes defensive tactics and applied close protection exercises
The online component must be completed prior to attending the face-to-face practical training. Students will be prompted via their portal to arrange practical training dates once key milestones are achieved.
