The QLD Security Dog Handler Course provides specialised training for licensed security officers seeking to work professionally with patrol dogs in Queensland. This skill set develops capability in canine behaviour, wellbeing management, operational K9 handling and protective services deployment.


Delivered through blended online study and five days of hands-on, scenario-based training with real security dogs, the course prepares participants to apply for the Security Officer (Dog Patrol) function on a Queensland Class 1 Security Providers Licence, subject to individual eligibility.




As a Security Dog Handler, your responsibilities may include:


  • Safely handling and controlling security dogs during routine and high-risk patrols

  • Monitoring canine wellbeing, behaviour and operational readiness

  • Applying structured training principles and environmental conditioning

  • Deploying K9 assets within patrol and protective services environments

  • Maintaining safety, situational awareness and professional conduct in operational settings



Course Outcome


On successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for the CPPSS00060 Canine Skill Set, which includes:


  • CPPSEC3112 Manage training and well-being of dogs for security functions

  • CPPSEC3113 Handle dogs for security patrols



These units may provide credit toward further qualifications, including:


  • CPP31318 Certificate III in Security Operations



Entry Requirements


Mandatory Prior Qualification


  • CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations



The dog handler skill set alone does not meet the training requirements for a Queensland Class 1 Security Providers Licence.


Participants should also:


  • Be at least 18 years of age

  • Provide valid photo identification

  • Meet general security licensing eligibility and probity requirements



Licence & Regulatory Information


Completion of this course does not automatically grant the Dog Patrol function. Graduates intending to work as a Security Officer (Dog Patrol) must apply through the Queensland Office of Fair Trading and meet all licensing requirements.

Practical Component


  • 5 days of intensive, in-person training

  • Scenario-based exercises with trained security dogs
